  16. I've been using a USR Sportster 28.8 for a few months now. I don't use it very 
  17. often, but I have a recurrent problem: the modem always connects OK the first 
  18. time I call my ISP, runs OK for some time (5-15 min) then disconnects (this is 
  19. not a time-out, it will stop in the middle of receiving). If I try to 
  20. reconnect, it fails to make contact with the modem at the other end - the ISP 
  21. answers OK, but then fails to establish a connection. I can try reconnecting 
  22. 10-20 times with no success. I don't believe that the problem is with the 
  23. ISP's modem, as colleagues using the same service have no problem.

  25. I've heard that some early Sportsters had problems with downward spiralling 
  26. speeds, but my modem connects OK at 28.8 or fails completely. I feel that the 
  27. symptoms I've described are compatible with an overheating component - has this 
  28. been described for these modems in the past? I'm afraid I haven't followed 
  29. comp.dcom.modems at all until now.
